Arena Group extended its heritage of supplying momentous British occasions with its involvement in the Centenary of the Battle of the Somme commemoration, held at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s Thiepval Memorial, 1st July 2016.
Working with event organisers HPower, Arena Seatings’ 10-strong crew was called upon to install 13,000 temporary seats across the memorial grounds to offer the ticketed audience unparalleled views of the historical occasion. Due to high public demand, the event was also broadcast live on large screens across the Somme region. 9,500 Samsonite flat seats were installed in front of the Thiepval Memorial Tower, along with 700 VVIP chairs with padded seats and a further 2,000 flat seats were supplied to the 20 x 150m Welcome Tent alongside a WW1 plane and tank display. An additional 1,000 loose flat seats were supplied for the Ulster Memorial during Arena Seating’s phased four day installation.
Arena Structures was honoured to supply 10,000sqm of temporary structure installations, including a 3,000sqm welcome tent, a VVIP dining tent, a performance stage, media centre and 2,600sqm green room.
Following a nationwide two minute silence that marked when the Battle of the Somme began, members of the Royal Family including the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry all joined French President Francois Hollande to pay their respects to over a million casualties who were killed and wounded during the WW1 battle.
